Nice Work If You Can Get It features Gershwin classics, dynamic dance numbers, and romantic subplots -Lighthearted musical opens at The Western Stage on Nov. 12

SALINAS, Calif. – The Western Stage wraps up its 42nd repertory season with a Tony Award-winning musical comedy featuring the Gershwin brothers’ most famous hits, including “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off,” “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “‘S Wonderful.” Nice Work If You Can Get it opens at the Mainstage Theater on November 12 and runs through December 10, 2016 at Hartnell College, 411 Central Ave., Salinas. With a book by Tony Award-winner Joe DiPietro, this dazzling musical comedy is set in the roaring ’20s. It follows a charming and wealthy playboy, Jimmy Winters (Tim Marquette), who meets a streetwise female bootlegger, Billie Bendix (Jen Brooks), the day before his wedding. Billie finds out that Jimmy has a beach house that he never uses and convinces her sidekicks, Cookie (Donald Sturch) and Duke (Jayar Walker), to store 400 cases of gin in the cellar. Hilarious chaos erupts when Jimmy shows up to the house with his new bride and her Prohibition-loving family in tow, forcing the trio to pose as the serving staff and keep the family away from the cellar. Meanwhile a love story unfolds between Jimmy and Billie. The only thing standing in their way is that Jimmy is somewhat married—and Billie is a fugitive with gin in the cellar and the Feds at the door.

Hedy Weiss from the Chicago Sun-Times writes: “Nice Work If You Can Get It is pure, unadulterated bliss. It’s a gem of a musical jukebox.” The Western Stage’s production is directed and choreographed by Diane Jones with assistant director Melissa Chin-Parker and assistant choreographer Joelle McGrath, musical direction by Don Dally, scenic design by Theodore Michael Dolas, costume design by Suzanne Mann, hair and makeup design by Maegan Roux, lighting design by Derek Duarte, and sound design by Jeff Mockus.
